5 Skin Care Habits to Break Immediately

5 Skin Care Habits to Break Immediately

Skincare is one of the things so many of us forget about or neglect because it can seem more like a chore than a soothing ritual to look forward to. We all fall into some bad habits sometimes, and that’s perfectly normal! The trick is to recognize those bad habits that we want to break and work on slow daily changes to improve them!

Here’s a quick list below of the top 5 bad skincare habits that need to be broken immediately to help save (and soothe) your skin!

1. Not moisturizing or staying hydrated enough

Healthy skin requires moisture from the inside out, especially during the winter and summer months. Making sure to drink plenty of water and avoiding too much caffeine can help maintain hydration for the body. Aim to drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water (juice, milk, and other non-caffeinated liquids count!) a day.

However, don’t forget to moisturize on the outside too! Often, we use too little to really reap the benefits moisturizing creams have to offer. Read the tips below to learn more:

How much moisturizer to use on the body:

  • Quarter-sized amount for each leg and torso
  • Nickel-sized amount on each arm
  • Dime-sized amount on each hand
  • Pea-sized amount for face

2. Showers/baths are too hot

It may be tempting to take a nice hot shower or bath after a long day, but it’s important to be mindful of exactly how high those temperatures are! Hot water can dry out your skin and even dehydrate the body because of the rise in the body’s temperature. Try lowering the temperature slightly every day until you reach a soothing and comfortable level that doesn’t leave your skin too dry and itchy.

3. Exfoliating too much or not at all

Exfoliating can feel great because it feels like the skin is getting squeaky clean and clearing out pores. However, if it’s done too often, it can cause dryness and redness and cause the skin to produce excess oil, which can lead to more breakouts. Our recommendation is to use a gentle and natural exfoliating cleanser once a week.

4. Not using sunscreen

Whether it’s bright and sunny out or a bit cloudy and overcast, exposure to harsh UV rays can cause premature aging of the skin. it’s important to use a moisturizer with SPF or proper sunscreen to protect your skin from the harsh UV rays. Sun damage isn’t limited to those with fair skin! Everyone can benefit from sun protection!

5. Not washing your face at night

It may seem like a chore to wash your face twice a day, but you can turn this into a ritual you truly look forward to by using your favorite products. Caring for your skin before bed helps to clear out the pores of blemish-causing dirt, oil, and bacteria. Take the time to nurture and pamper your skin and think about it as a special time to unwind from a busy day. Your skin (and your wallet) will thank you for it!
