What Is Neroli Essential Oil?
Neroli essential oil is extracted from the flowers of bitter orange trees (Citrus aurantium var. amara, to be exact). It’s also known as orange blossom oil. The oil is extracted from the flowers by steam distillation, emitting a rich efflorescent and citrusy aroma.
Because of its soothing effect on mood, neroli oil is touted to be one to keep around! (Like, for a humidifier or oil diffuser, perhaps?) As an essential oil on its own (for aromatherapy purposes), some evidence suggests benefits from neroli can include relief from: high blood pressure, seizures, depression, anxiety, and menopausal symptoms.
Most importantly (for the purpose of this post and in a non-aromatherapeutic sense), it’s used as a base note in perfumes and scented products and is often used as an ingredient in body lotions and cosmetics.
How Does it Work?
In one study, reported in the Pakistan Journal of Biological Sciences, it indicates that neroli oil has antimicrobial, antifungal, and antioxidant properties. This may make it helpful for reducing acne breakouts and skin irritation.
During the same study, neroli showed antimicrobial activity against SIX kinds of bacteria and THREE different fungi (and exhibited strong antifungal activity when compared with a standard antibiotic called nystatin).
Neroli oils anti-inflammatory properties may make them beneficial for topical and internal use.
(ugh. I hate that I have to type this... but:
"PLEASE do not ingest our products. They're for topical use only!!
All of them. No exceptions. None. Just don't do it."
Okay, now back to the cool stuff.)
As a skin treatment, it may reduce inflammation and irritation. A study in the Journal of Natural Medicines suggests that "neroli possesses biologically active constituents that have the ability to reduce acute inflammation and chronic inflammation even more so. "Additionally, it was found that this essential oil has the ability to reduce "central and peripheral sensitivity to pain."
Known for its ability to regenerate skin cells and improve elasticity in our skin, using products that contain neroli is never a bad idea. This oil can also be beneficial for wrinkles, scars, and stretch marks, all due to its ability to revive the skin at a cellular level.
Skin conditions may improve, heal, and calm their severity, especially for anyone suffering with stress-related issues. And, as I already told ya, it has been shown to be very useful when caring for bacterial skin conditions and rashes, as its antimicrobial properties target the damage.
Here's an interesting fact: most of my research has talked about the combination of neroli and jojoba oils being used together. Apparently, this duo packs a pretty powerful punch... and we're using them both!
Who knew so many benefits came from these tiny, little, white, waxy flowers found on a bitter orange tree? Honestly, I didn't. I knew Bill had spent YEARS making these formulas and testing out all of the best ingredients... but I didn't consider why these products were working so well. I was just happy they did! And it seems like he knew exactly what he was doing.
((*Those of you who are already part of our ohana... you know I speak nothing but the truth. 😊 *))
